The effect of oxandrolone on, the changesof HbF: in the aplastic anemia and chronic renal failure

Abstract
In order to evaluate the effect of oxandrolone (SC-11585) to the bone-marrow in the patients with aplastic anemia and chronic renal faiure, the HbF were measured weekly after administration of oxandrolone (6mg/day) for 4 weeks.
The HbF level of normal adult was 0.74¡¾0.38% (0.1+0.05gm%) of total hemoglobin ranged from 0.21 % to 1. 45 %.
The HbF levels of aplastic anemia and chronic renal failure were significantly elevated above normal range in the majority of patients.
Aplastic anemia showed remarkable increase in HbF levels following oxandrolone treatment, while those levels of chronic renal failure were rather reduced after therapy.
The finding was suggested that the stimulation of red cell proliferation in response to androgen therapy may be resulted in the production of fetal red cells through the effect of erythropoietin.
